Hey! I’m Makala

I'm the lady behind the lens with Makala Winters Photography! I'm a world traveler, a self-taught photographer, wife to my most amazing husband, and a mother to three beautiful children. We are a U.S. Military family and we don't exactly know where to say we are "from" anymore. I was born and raised in Worland, Wyoming but after high school I quickly married my husband, started a family, and we found ourselves residing in Belgium. After an amazing four years in Belgium, we spent the next 4 years exploring and documenting the state of Utah! And NOW we live on the beautiful island of Guam!

My story began with a camera.

As long as I can remember, I’ve been interested in photography. I would use several rolls of film just messing around with my mom’s camera. Usually without permission too. Eventually my parents got one of the first ever digital cameras… and I was hooked. I saved up all of my babysitting money and had my cousin help me decide on what camera to buy. When it came in the mail I immediately started taking pictures of my friends, flowers, and anything neat I came across. I signed up for a free PicMonkey account and made some horrendous editing jobs on those images as well. But eventually I figured it out and was able to create images I was very proud of. After we moved to Belgium I had people asking to book with me for sessions….. and so my journey as a professional photographer began!

Though I was a “photographer” back in Wyoming it wasn't until we moved thousands of miles away from our family that I started to push myself to do more than just take pictures. I wanted to tell the story of our lives. And I was going to do just that through my images.

Born and raised in Worland, Wyoming, with 9 years of professional photography experience, I fell in love with photographing my life, and the lives of my clients.
